Post-delivery care

Dr Tisane has a special interest in Maternal care. As a qualified Ob-gyn, she cares for women both during and after their pregnancies.

Six weeks after giving birth, you will need to come in for an ob-gyn exam called a postnatal check-up. While giving birth may be a normal and natural process, some women experience a few health challenges, and it's important that they are examined and treated promptly. The baby also needs to be checked to make sure that he/she is growing healthily.

The consequences of skipping your postnatal appointment can be serious: it can lead to incomplete healing, an unwanted pregnancy, an overlooked infection, undiagnosed postnatal depression and other health concerns. Taking the time to keep this appointment is vital and can pay off in many ways, both physically and emotionally.

A postnatal check-up for a new mother includes:

  • Checking your general health
  • Checking your incision (If you had a tear during vaginal delivery)
  • Checking your mental and emotional well-being
  • Examining your uterus, ovaries, and cervix
  • Examining your breasts for any abnormalities

During your appointment, Dr Tisane will also ask if:

  • You're feeling sad or anxious
  • You're having trouble holding in your pee
  • Having sex is painful

Dr Tisane also offers contraceptive advice and child spacing services for new mothers. Child spacing refers to the practice of waiting between pregnancies to conceive again. A woman’s body needs to rest for a while after pregnancy. We recommend that you wait at least 18 months before trying to conceive again, in order to maintain the optimal health for yourself and your children.
