Contraception advice and prescription

Your choice of birth control depends on various factors, including your general health, your gynaecological health, how often you have intercourse, and whether or not you want children. As a qualified ob-gyn, Dr Tisane will sit down with you and carefully discuss the pros and cons of each method to help you decide what option will best suit your needs.

Dr Tisane provides a wide variety of contraceptive methods, including:

Birth control pills

There are two types of birth control pills:

Progestin-only pills: these contain only progestin and exclude estrogen. These pills must be taken within the same 3 hours every day to prevent pregnancy.

Combination pills: These contain two hormones: estrogen and progestin. Take one pill every day to prevent pregnancy. It is not necessary to take your combination pill at the same time every day.

IUCD (Mirena, copper T) insertion & removal

This device is inserted into the uterus (womb) to prevent pregnancy. There are many types of IUCDs, and they come in different shapes and sizes. Commonly used types are IUCDs containing copper.

Sterilisation

A permanent method of birth control. In this procedure, the fallopian tubes are closed off, preventing the egg from moving down the fallopian tube and keeping the sperm from reaching the egg.

Injections

The injection releases progestogen into your bloodstream to prevent pregnancy.

Nuva Rings

These are flexible, transparent plastic ring that's inserted into the vagina. You wear NuvaRing for three weeks, and then remove it — allowing menstruation to occur — and then insert a new ring after a week.

If you’re new to contraceptives or simply want to change your existing method, contact Dr Tisane. She will be able to guide you towards the method that is best suited to your reproductive needs.
